Memories Re-lived

I have been ranting and raving about Jane Elizabeth Kotze’s final range for a week. A range, that just brings a big smile to my face.

I always love it when I find young design talent that brings about more excitement and competition in the South African fashion industry. Jane Elizabeth Kotze’s a 3rd year student at Elizabeth Galloway has created a beautiful final range. Jane’s use of floral print is to be applauded. I love floral print and in this case floral print was combined with crochet, to create the most interesting silhouettes and textures. The range brings about a feeling of happiness. It is almost like one is in a dream like state while viewing the different garments.

In most fashion schools the final range is the time to showcase all the hard work a student has done. The final range is taken as self-expression range .The students are encouraged to reflect their personalities and do some soul searching in order to prepare for their final ranges.

Jane’s inspiration was sourced from her family. Jane originates from a family full of women who are known for never throwing away anything, in hoping that they will re-use the object in the future. Yes, a very weird habit that I myself is often guilty of. Jane wanted to re-use materials that her grandmother and mother had saved up over the years. Jane also bought second hand curtains and tablecloths to use in the range. The process of re-using lead to her thinking about the past, and missing all the memories created. In Reminiscing through past memories she was inspired to reflect the childish charm of fairytales and dressing up games with historical reference to the Victorian times, in order to create a fun and accessible range.

The range is fun and exciting. I cannot wait to see what Elizabeth Kotze will produce in the future.

Vuyo xoxo
