Vogue Italia:Water and oil_06/11/2010

A shoot that shows the impact the Gulf of Mexico oil spill has had on our ecological system. Steven Meisel delivers an artistic representation of the oil spill. Model Kirsten Mcmenny represents the pain and suffering the marine life are experiencing.

Below we express our opinions about this shoot:

Alisha
A cold, mysterious and hostile shoot that demonstrates the seriousness of the oil spills that have taken place. It is like a dark wave washed the woman up against the rocks along with a thick layer of oil.

The  models are like metaphoric symbols of the marine life that are affected by the oil spill.

Vuyo

The Bp oil leak adds to one of the many more problems on our planet. Kirsten Mcmenamy is portrayed in an awful state. A strong feeling of abuse is brought about. The shoot has successful brought a feeling of shame to me. Yes, I realise that we are only sympathetic when something affects us directly. We have lost the sense of being sympathetic to others.

Tlhogi

The photographs taken were beautiful in a not so beautiful way!? If u get what I mean. Contradicting more than anything. A man made filthy disaster met by the expensive an exclusive haute couture, clothing which must have travelled a long distance to get to the shoot, a lot of money was put into this!

Conclusion

The reason this was such a controversial shoot is due to the fact that many of the animal activists believed that Vogue used this as a platform to advertise the fashion garments produced by Ralph Lauren. Across the world this was seen as a serious issue. We believe the shoot was successful in portraying the emotion however those outside the fashion world believe Vogue did this for commercial reasons

Costa’s spring/Summer 2011 collection was nothing close to avant-garde or couture, Francisco Costa proved the old saying: simplicity is the ultimate sophistication, correct.

The modern age of individualism has forced us to go back to the beginning. A total pendulum swing has happened and the final destination looks rather good. A clean, white, pure and natural state is introduced by Francisco Costa.

 The words structural simplicity and more-is-less best described this collection. It doesn't look like he went too far in search of inspiration, Costa’s colours and silhouettes ranging from a snow white sleeveless jumpsuit made from the finest silk with a functional draw string finish around the waist to a pearl white silk dress with an exaggerated v-neck. Not complicated at all finishes were all kept to a minimum, elegantly so!

Costa’s range proves that simplicity is always the best mode of dress. The business woman is assured in this label that business and pleasure sure can come to some sort of agreement.  The use of drapery, functional detail and the mixtures of simple silhouettes echoed the minimalist architecture of our days.

The collection had to be the most uncompromising and the most relevant, especially for those who work and crave a structural and functional wardrobe. Nothing beats understanding and efficiency. Francisco Costa has truly come to the rescue!

Yes we know you are thinking ‘Ag not Rihanna again.’

But just give us a chance to explain ourselves.

We have seen so many images of Rihanna but this image however caught my eye because of it’s simple composition .Here we are exposed to something different. Rihanna in this image is not defined by the clothes that she is wearing but is defined by her natural body features. Craig Mcdean’s use of lighting to form natural shadows is absolutely beautiful. The Movement that has been created in this image is genius. This just screams amazing. Rihanna’s hair, tattoos, leather gloves and skirt all contribute to producing this wonderful image. Black and white photography   was the best choice of medium, as the contours and shadows of her body are shown beautifully in a natural way. It is a great to see Rihanna in this simple look.
